The Mehldau Chamber Orchestra

An interesting piece by Charles Ives. The unanswered Question has 3 elements. 1.The Strings who musically represent eternity (time and space) 2. The solo muted trumpet that poses a musical question ( The question of existence) 3. The woodwind 4tet that represents mans constant struggle to answer the dilemma of why we exist.
The question is always asked calmly however the woodwind 4tet (humanity) become increasingly frustrated in their attempts to explain our existence. Each answer becomes faster and more agitated finally ending in frenzied dissonance. The answer ultimately is unexplained and the piece fades to quiet ( a niente) shortly after the the question is asked for the last time by the the muted trumpet.
